Just now the world’s biggest BNPL payment company @Klarna announced that it plans to issue its own stablecoin KlarnaUSD on @tempo, the L1 blockchain that @stripe is building.
Since the GENIUS Act, tons of financial companies and institutions have been exploring or announcing their own stablecoins.
So when people hear the news about KlarnaUSD, they might just shrug and think, “Oh, another company launching a stablecoin”. But to me, this one is a genuine game changer.
First, a quick intro to Klarna. Klarna is a Swedish fintech company that provides BNPL services for online purchases.
Klarna’s BNPL lets shoppers pay for goods or services without paying the full price upfront. Instead they can pay flexibly like this:
Pay in 4
: split the purchase into four interest free payments over a short period
Pay over time
: long term installment plans
Pay in 30 days
: pay the full amount within 30 days
Pay in full
: pay everything at the moment of purchase
For merchants, Klarna pays out the order amount immediately once a purchase is made, which means sellers do not take on additional risk compared to traditional payments.
If you bring BNPL products on chain using a stablecoin, you unlock all sorts of features that were impossible before.
First there are the obvious benefits everyone already knows:
Cross border payments
: when the buyer and seller are in different countries, payments can be handled quickly with low fees.
Instant settlement
: settlement that used to take two or three days can be done instantly on chain.
Now if we let our imagination run a bit, here are some much more exciting possibilities:
Micro payments
: instead of something like Pay in 4, on chain you could stream payments by the minute in micro increments.
Integration with earn products
: consumers could deposit their stablecoins into yield generating vaults and use the real time interest to pay their BNPL installments.
Integration with RWA protocols
: the BNPL business has a massive accounts receivable market. Klarna could connect its BNPL receivable assets to private credit protocols so stablecoin holders can invest in them.
BNPL for AI agents
: Stripe Tempo plans to provide payments for AI agents and Klarna’s BNPL could be used in agentic commerce built on Tempo.
In short, on chain you can create pretty much any payment option you can imagine.
Stablecoin based BNPL is still a very new and unexplored field. But there has been one team already building an on chain BNPL protocol and that is @YumiFinance.
With Klarna announcing KlarnaUSD, I expect on chain BNPL to start getting a lot more attention.
